I am passionate about:
I am passionate about democratising leadership and would like to build a cadre of young professionals from different sectors (corporates, public and civil society) who can exercise leadership in the daily lives and professional careers. I am also passionate about expanding the concept of Global Citizenship and using leadership knowledge and practice in doing this.
I am a Development Activist, Leadership Trainer, Social Innovator, Public policy Advocate and Author. Greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian Monk who lived in the 19th century, I founded the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), based on the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (Truth), Seva (Service) and Tyaga (Sacrifice). I have spent more than 25 years of my life in the service of the rural and tribal poor in the forests of India. I have built this non-profit organization into India’s leading development organization and the SVYM (www.svym.org) today runs more than 50 projects reaching out to nearly 2.5 million people across the state of Karnataka, India. I am also the Founder and Chairman of Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement (www.graam.org.in), a public policy thinktank. I am also a visiting faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and continue to be a visiting professor at the ILR School, Cornell University, USA. I teach courses on Adaptive Leadership at both these Institutions.
As the Special Investigator, I have assisted the Lok Ayukta (the anti-corruption agency), Karnataka in investigating into issues of mal-administration and Corruption in the health sector and in the Public Distribution System. I am a Tata Scholar, a Mason Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School and a Fellow at the Hauser Center for Civil Society, Harvard University. Apart from teaching Leadership in reputed Universities both in India and abroad, I run leadership workshops for corporates, non-profits and government agencies.
I have authored 6 books and write extensively about Swami Vivekananda and on Development Issues in local Kannada and English newspapers and in my blog at rbalu.com. My book ‘I, the Citizen’ has been widely acclaimed around the world and the global edition of the same has been re-published by the Cornell University Press. My other popular book is ‘Voices from the Grassroots’.
