I am passionate about:
I am fascinated by cross-cultural leadership. I also love exploring the similarities and differences between the adaptive leadership framework and other human systems theories such as bio-power, 3-D negotiations, classic organizing, Hoffman Process, True North, Integral Theory, and Tavistock Group Relations.
Andrew Johnston currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Party for RTI International’s USAID-funded Literacy Achievement and Retention Activity (LARA), a $35.9 million applied-research project focused on early grade reading and school safety in 3,460 schools in Uganda. Mr. Johnston brings over a decade experience in international development and humanitarian relief to LARA. Most recently, Mr. Johnston established monitoring and evaluation systems for Local Enterprise and Value Chain Enhancement (LEVE), a $32.6 million USAID-funded economic growth and workforce development project in Haiti. Prior to that, Mr. Johnston was the Deputy Chief of Party for RTI International’s USAID-funded Tout Timoun Apli (ToTAL) applied research project in Haiti. On ToTAL, Mr. Johnston ensured quality, on-time completion of contract deliverables including curriculum, while also supporting the early grade reading assessment (EGRA) surveys and overseeing teacher training and managing relations with the Haitian government. Mr. Johnston was Head of Mission for Relief International’s 2010 Haiti earthquake relief operations, Project Coordinator for the construction of the Mirebalais Hospital in Haiti for Partners In Health, and Field Coordinator overseeing emergency programs in response to the armed conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the 2008 earthquake in in Pakistan. Mr. Johnston’s approach to management is informed by his study of adaptive leadership with Dr. Ronald Heifetz and Dr. Dean Williams, community organizing with Dr. Marshall Ganz, and adult development with Dr. Robert Kegan. During his time as an MC/MPA, Mr. Johnston was the lead organizer for the HKS Campaign to Save Adaptive Leadership.
I can thought partner on the following topics:
Applied leadership for practitioners. The practice of cross-cultural leadership. Politics. Activism. Environmental sustainability is our main adaptive challenge - very interest in working that problem.
